This entry is part 4 of 10 in the series 11gR2 RAC on x86 64bit Solaris 10

This section describes the following tasks

Create Virtual Machine

Once VMWARE SERVER is installed, we can create a virtual machine and configure it. Here, we will choose the OS type, number of CPUs, Memory, network, disks, etc for the virtual machine. The following images are screen shots of actual configuration

Create Virtual Machine 01

Choose Location - Datastore

Create Virtual Machine 02

Choose Operating System

Create Virtual Machine 03

Allocate Memory And CPU

Create Virtual Machine 04

Create Virtual Disk 01

Create Virtual Machine 05

Create Virtual Disk 02

Create Virtual Machine 06

Add Network Adapter 01

Create Virtual Machine 07

Add Network Adapter 02

Create Virtual Machine 08

Choose CD/DVD Drive 01

Create Virtual Machine 09

Choose CD/DVD Drive 02

Create Virtual Machine 10

Choose Floppy Drive - Skip this

Create Virtual Machine 11

Add USB Controller 01

Create Virtual Machine 12

Add USB Controller 02

Create Virtual Machine 13

Confirm and Finish

Add Network adapters

Add 1 more network adapter (for private network, VIP will be running virtually on the Public interface), by clicking the Add Hardware link on VMWare homepage for this Virtual Machine

Add Network Card

Add Network Card

Create shared datastore

Create a new datastore to store VM Shared files. Call this VMShared datastore.

Add disks for ACFS, Binary Homes and Stage areas

With Oracle 11gR2, Oracle clusterware and ASM now are installed into the Same Oracle Home, and is now called the grid infrastructure install.
Raw devices are no longer supported for use for anything for new installs.

OCR and Voting disk can now be stored in ASM, or a certified cluster file system.

The redundancy level of your ASM diskgroup (That you choose to place voting disk on) determines the number of voting disks you can have.
You can place

  • Only One voting disk on an ASM diskgroup configured as external redundancy
  • Only Three voting disks on an ASM diskgroup configured as normal redundancy
  • Only Five voting disks on an ASM diskgroup configured as high redundancy

Now add 3 disks of 1GB each for ASM disks (which will host the voting disks and OCR disks). Choose the VMShared datastore for these disks. Here, we first need to create a new data store for this location

Create ASM Disk 01

Create ASM Disk 01

Create ASM Disk 02

Create ASM Disk 02

Create ASM Disk 03

Create ASM Disk 03

Your VM will look like this – 4 hard disks and 3 network cards
